52nd Annual Kiwanis Barbecue

Our annual barbecue fundraiser will be held Friday, October 7, 2016 in the Christian Growth Center of Waynesville First United Methodist Church.  Come enjoy a plate of barbecue, cole slaw, baked beans, dessert, and soft drink for $10.00 and help improve the lives of children in Haywood County.  Since 2000 Kiwanis has provided over $500,000 to support projects and programs for our children.  The funds raised by the barbecue are a major part of this effort.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.  The Kiwanis Club of Waynesville meets on Tuesdays fro 11:30 to 1:00 for lunch and a program at Laurel Ridge Country Club.  We welcome new members and visitors.

KIWANIS AWARDS $34,500 IN GRANTS FOR CHILDREN

The Kiwanis Club of Waynesville is happy to announce the recipients of this year’s awards from the Jim and Betty Scott Fund and the Kiwanis Unrestricted Fund.  Both these annual grant funds provide support for projects that serve children in Haywood County.  Recipients are selected on the basis of proposals submitted to the club.  This year we received requests for over $200,000 in unmet needs of children in our community and the schools and organizations that serve them.

There are five awards of $5000 each from the Scott Fund this year.  They are Haywood County Schools, Second Grade Science Kits, Ron Moss -- Jonathan Valley Elementary School, Technology Improvements, Heather Hollingsworth -- Haywood County Schools, Social Thinking project, April Wilson -- Waynesville Parks and Recreation, Bicycles for Base Camp Waynesville, Tim Petrea -- and Canton Middle School, Science Curriculum, Juliana Weaver.  Grants from the Scott Fund support projects for children age 13 and under.

The 2015 awards from the Kiwanis Unrestricted Fund go to Bethel Middle School, $2000 for technology for Exceptional Children, Kara Shuford -- Canton Middle School, $2000 for Special Needs Children, Dana Sippe -- Clothes to Kids, $500, Lois Beery Fulmer -- Jonathan Valley Elementary School, $900 for second grade science-rich books, Roxana Brestle -- Jonathan Valley Elementary School, $600 for fourth grade high-interest literature books, Ashley Caldwell -- Pisgah High School, $1500 technology improvement for Counseling, Teresa Heinz, Andi Lawing and Heather Allen -- Pisgah High School, $1000 for technology for Exceptional Children, Jack Hogue -- and Clyde Elementary School, $1000 for technology for Counseling, Joy Sollie.

Of the $34,500 total awarded, $29,000 went for needs in our schools.

The Kiwanis Club expresses its deep appreciation for the work that all our applicants do to improve the lives of our children.  Funds for the Scott Grants are from a bequest by Jim and Betty Scott.  The Kiwanis Unrestricted Grants are supported by the club’s fundraisers that include our annual BBQ in October, the Community Spelling Bee in April, and the year-round American flag service on national Holidays.  We thank all those in the local community without whose continued support these grants would not be possible.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.  The Kiwanis Club of Waynesville meets at noon each Tuesday at Laurel Ridge Country Club.  We welcome new members.
